When hunger calls, you may find yourself resorting to a drive-thru. Before you throw in the towel, consider these tips for successful drive thru dining:

Time Out!

Drive-thrus are designed to present the menu and promptly request your order. This design can leave us flustered and ready to shout out the first thing that comes to mind. Unfortunately, that tends to not be the best choice. Instead, take a moment to look through the menu before you order.  Better to get what you want than rush what you don’t!

Go Vegetarian

Many fast food restaurants now offer vegetarian options that are often lower in fat, calories and sodium. Take it a step further and skip add-ons like mayo and cheese which can add hundreds of sneaky calories.

Choose Smart sides

Instead of fries, hash browns and onion rings, consider requesting a salad, fruit, milk, or soup. Or skip the sides altogether! The message here is to avoid the cookie-cutter approach to ordering from the pictures and instead consider your options.

Un-Wich the sandwich

Lose the bottom half of your bun or double up your sandwich on one slice of bread. You can also ask for an extra lettuce leaf and use that as the bun! This can easily save 100-200 calories or more.
